BEST MINING STRATEGIES FOR DIAMONDS
Branch Mining at Y-59
Branch mining is the most consistent manual approach. Dig a central corridor at Y-59 that is two blocks tall and one block wide. Then carve side branches every other block, extending each one 20 to 30 blocks. This layout exposes the maximum number of block faces per pickaxe swing, giving you a reliable stream of diamond finds.
Because you are deep in the deepslate layer, an Efficiency IV or V pickaxe is almost mandatory here. Deepslate takes noticeably longer to break than regular stone, and without a good enchantment the process becomes tedious quickly.
Exploring Deep Caves
The enormous cave networks often plunge well below Y0. Walking through these caverns lets you scan exposed walls and ceilings for diamond ore without breaking a single block. The tradeoff is that the reduced-air-exposure mechanic means cave-visible diamonds are rarer than buried ones, and navigating massive dark caves carries a higher mob-danger risk.
If you take this route, carry night-vision potions or plenty of torches, a shield, and a water bucket. Focus on scanning deepslate walls around Y-50 to Y-59 for the best odds.
Combining Both Methods
Many experienced players combine the two approaches. They follow deep caves to cover ground quickly, then when they hit a dead end or a particularly diamond-rich altitude, they switch to branch mining from that spot. This hybrid strategy balances speed and thoroughness.
